Introduction

Graduate Programme 2000 (GP 2000) is a co-ordinated effort by the financial industry to offer 8-12 month work placements for up to 2,000 unemployed graduates under the Protégé scheme.

Professional Training and Education for Growing Entrepreneurs (PROTÉGÉ), previously known as SL1M, is a long-standing initiative under the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Cooperative development which many financial institutions have participated in since 2011. The aim of the programme is to develop and mentor youth in collaboration with industry experts in the quest to produce more competitive job creators for the global market and skilled job seekers who meet the needs of industry.

WHY SHOULD GRADUATES APPLY?

GP 2000 follows the guidelines set by PROTÉGÉ and provides 8-12 months soft skills and on-the-job training that covers seven skills areas; communication, analytical thinking, value driven professional, organizational adaptability, etiquette, entrepreneurship and environment sustainability, social impact and other skills relevant to the financial industry. This enables graduates to gain skills and experience that will position them well to achieve their future career goals be that in the financial industry or any other industry.

HOW DOES A GRADUATE APPLY?

Vacancies are posted by host companies on their web pages and social media with links made available on this website and at www.protege.com.

Graduates are required to go through the application and screening process with the host company with selected candidates being offered a fixed term placement.

WHAT SKILLS ARE HOST COMPANIES LOOKING FOR IN A GRADUATE?

Companies understand that graduates have limited work experience but generally, apart from your formal qualifications, they all differ in what they are looking for but some common areas are:

  • Team or leadership experience: participation in non-academic activities.
  • Communication: a confident communicator, including in English.
  • Teachability: a willingness to learn (starting with knowing about the company they are applying to!)
  • Professionalism: in communications, dress, punctuality etc.
