HIP-FINCO Reads: Empowering Teachers, Inspiring Readers

Teacher Sivashangary, SJKT Ladang Kemuning

Before joining the HIP-FINCO Reads programme, some students at SJKT Ladang Kemuning KRU, Melaka faced difficulties with reading and meeting their diverse learning needs was a challenge. This began to change following Teacher Sivashangary’s participation in FINCO’s teacher training.

Teacher Sivashangary benefited from the training, particularly the introduction to reading age assessment tool. This practical tool enabled her to understand each pupil’s reading ability, leading to more effective grouping and personalised instruction. Furthermore, FINCO’s IRC Toolkit provided her with useful techniques like skimming, scanning, storytelling, and structured activities to enhance different stages of reading lessons.

Teacher Siva began to approach reading as a skill developed through imaginative and purposeful methods. Recognising this evolution, she created targeted reading exercises designed to address specific learning deficiencies. One student, Ravi*, had a reading age of 7 at the age of 11. After several months of regular support, his reading age improved to age 9. Another student, Gopinath*, exceeded his reading age and now confidently reads English novels independently. Similar progress was observed in students like Ramya, Lydia, Brintha, and Karthiga*, who all benefitted from differentiated instruction.

“The IRC has completely changed how my students view reading. Even those who used to struggle now look forward to spending time there,” shared Teacher Sivashangary.

FINCO’s Outstanding Student Competition marked a significant step in the learning journey where students independently chose stories, reimagined plots, wrote scripts, and recorded video presentations. These activities enhanced reading comprehension, vocabulary, creativity, confidence, and communication skills. All seven participants gained a valuable learning experience.

The HIP-FINCO Reads programme has significantly improved student motivation, confidence, and engagement in reading at SJKT Ladang Kemuning, transforming it into a meaningful experience for both students and their teacher.
