HIP-FINCO Reads: Igniting the Spark for Future Leaders

Before joining the HIP-FINCO Reads programme, reading was not a natural habit for many pupils in Teacher Parvani’s classroom. Books felt distant as they were often too difficult or irrelevant to their everyday lives, resulting in low interest and minimal engagement. As an avid reader, Teacher Parvani was determined to bridge this gap.

The transformation began with the Assessment for Learning (AFL) workshop by FINCO Reads. Equipped new diagnostic tools, Teacher Parvani was able to better understand each pupil’s ability and tailor meaningful support. The creation of an Interactive Reading Corner (IRC), designed with input from the pupils themselves, became a turning point. What was once a quiet classroom transformed into a vibrant space where even the most reserved pupils found their voice and enthusiasm.

Through consistent reading activities such as choral and paired reading, alongside interactive and hands-on tasks, pupils gradually built confidence. One standout example is Tishan A/L Kumaran, who not only improved in reading proficiency but also emerged as the winner of the HIP-FINCO Reads Reading Challenge 2025. His achievement reflects a huge shift. Pupils now have the courage to participate in storytelling, public speaking, and creative literacy activities.

Today, the IRC is constantly filled with eager learners. Teacher Parvani’s classroom has evolved into a room of genuine love for reading.
