Each category will have a winner and a runner-up, selected based on judging criteria. The top 5 finalists’ submissions will also be uploaded on FINCO’s social media platforms to stand a chance to win the Popular Pick Award.

Guidelines

FINCO Reads: Outstanding Student Competition 2023 with the theme of “My Favourite Character” is a fun and engaging competition where students can make a short video telling us about their most favourite character or person from a fiction or non-fiction book they have read.

How can you participate?

Step 1: Choose a Book

  1. Choose any book from your preferred genre. It can be fiction, non-fiction, fantasy, mystery, adventure, or any other genre of your liking.
  2. Read the book, paying close attention to the characters or people and their actions and personality traits, and how you feel about them.

Step 2: Pick Your Favourite Character

  1. After finishing the book, select your favourite character or person from the book and think about why they are your favourite.

Step 3: Prepare and Record Your Presentation

  1. Create a well-structured presentation which is no more than 1.5 minutes long.
  2. You can use the following guide to help you:
    • WHAT is the title of the book, the genre and the author?
    • WHAT is the book about? (Explain in one or two sentences)
    • WHO is your favourite character/person?
    • WHAT is the character’s/person’s name, role and other information? (e.g. personality, and who they are)
    • WHY is this your favourite character/person?
    • WHAT memorable moments or exciting things does the character/person do in the book?
    • HOW did the character/person make you feel?
  3. Ensure that your recording area is well-lit, use English and speak confidently when you record your presentation!
  4. Save your video following this suggested naming convention for easier identification: My Favourite Character-Name_Category_School Name (e.g.: My Favourite Character – Farah Khadijah_Category B_ SK FINCO)

Step 4: Submit Your Entry Form

  1. Submit your entry by filling in the Entry Form. You may choose to do online or offline form submission!

What happens after you submit your entry?

Top 5 submissions for each category will be shortlisted.

6 Nov - 13 Nov: Pitching

  1. The finalists will be asked to do an online pitch to our friendly judges on a given day and date to convince them why you should win as well as to answer their questions.
  2. The judges will review all submissions and select the winners based on the judging criteria.

6 Nov - 13 Nov: Online Voting

  1. The finalists’ submissions will also be featured on FINCO’s social media platforms for the Popular Pick Award.
  2. The Popular Pick Award will be selected through a voting process through social media platforms where the members of public can vote for their preferred submission. The submission with the highest number of online votes will be the winner of the award.

27 Nov: Winner Announcement

What the judges are looking for?

Delivery of Content

You explain clearly about your favourite character, why it is your favourite, memorable moments or exciting things the character does in the book and how the character made you feel.

Presentation

You present your ideas in an organised way, clearly and fluently.

Impact and Style

You make people want to listen to your whole video and be interested in reading the book to learn about the character.

Creativity and Originality

Your video is original and creative, and you use relevant techniques to highlight your main points.

  1. Only primary or secondary students from government schools in Malaysia are eligible to participate in this competition. Participants who do not meet these criteria will be disqualified.
  2. Entries must be submitted in English and must be the original work of the student.
  3. Incomplete submissions will automatically be disqualified.
  4. Parental/Guardian Consent: If you are a student under the age of 18 or submitting on their behalf and are not their parent or guardian, before submitting an entry please ensure you have a parent or guardian’s permission to participate and their agreement to the following terms.
  5. Permission to publish: By entering this competition, you agree to give FINCO your permission to publish any materials for promotional or educational purposes on their online platforms. The publication will take place on the FINCO website, on Facebook and Instagram and it can be used for public relations purposes. In addition, you assure us that you own the rights to the text, photos and videos that you grant us the right to use them. We assume no responsibility for the contents of the individual contributions.
  6. Use and Disclosure of Personal Data and Purpose Specification: FINCO will keep confidential all personal information collected through this competition. We may however disclose such information to the following parties in the course of using the information for the reason it was collected:
    • A person or company acting on behalf of FINCO;
    • Any other person or company who has undertaken to keep such information confidential, provided they have a right to such information.
  7. Data Retention: We will keep any personal information you give us as long as there is a reason to do so, for instance to satisfy the law or regulations, or to protect our interests. If not, then we will destroy it by purging it from our electronic, manual, and other filing systems according to our internal procedures and schedules.
